A scratch choir and an orchestra of 20 professional soloists and musicians performed a concert of sacred and Baroque music on 5 March 2017. The main work was Vivaldi’s Gloria, complemented by other pieces by Vivaldi, Bach, Monteverdi and Mozart. The choral weekend was led by Greg Batsleer, Chorus Director of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.

Almost 100 people took part in the second annual Duns Community Challenge Quiz on 29 May, answering questions posed by quizmaster Jim McDevitt. The winning team was ‘Knolledge’, from The Knoll Hospital in Duns: Beverly Meins, Julia Turner, Simon McCann and Margaret Cameron. The runner up in a close final was ‘New Horizons’.

Handel’s Messiah was performed on 8 February 2015 to mark the 120th anniversary of the Volunteer Hall. A scratch choir of over 100, four soloists from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and 20 professional musicians were led by Greg Batsleer, Chorus Director of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the RSNO. The Jungle Book was the focus of a two-week summer school held at the Volunteer Hall in July 2014. It was organised by Duns and District Amateur Operatic Society and supported by the BBC Performing Arts Fund. (Photos above by Glen Shepherd)

The first Duns Community Challenge Quiz was held on 13 June 2014. Eight teams took part: winners were Scottish Borders Council — Museums (team colour: dark green); runners-up were The Rotary Club (team colour: royal blue). Trophies were sponsored by J Aitchison (Duns) Ltd and presented by Tracy Whitehead.
